Australia promotes HIV/AIDS diplomat
20may06 AUSTRALIA has promoted its most senior international official dealing with the issue of HIV/AIDS to ambassador rank.Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Annmaree O'Keeffe, formerly special representative for HIV/AIDS, would today become ambassador for HIV/AIDS.
"The upgrading of this appointment is part of the Australian Government's renewed commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS," Mr Downer said.
Ms O'Keeffe is a steering committee member of the UNAIDS Asia-Pacific Leadership Forum and sits on the advisory councils for the Australian National University's Centre for Democratic Institutions and Griffith University's Asia Institute.
The former journalist and ambassador to Nepal is currently a deputy director general at AusAID.
